PROMPT : “Romeo and Juliet shows that love has both costs and benefits.” ROMEO AND JULIET ESSAY!

“Romeo and Juliet shows that love has both costs and benefits.”

Romeo and Juliet shows that love does have both costs and benefits. Whether it’s the romantic love between Romeo and Juliet, the platonic love (friendship between Mercutio and Romeo) or family love (Juliet and her family).  There are many costs and benefits to Romeo and Juliet’s love. Romeo and Juliet both thought the benefits of their love could out weigh the costs. Unfortunately, the costs of their love were far greater than the benefits.

One of the benefits of Romeo and Juliet’s love was that in the end, their love for each other brought the two feuding families together at peace, despite all the pain and sufferings they had caused. The only reason why Friar Lawrence married the two star-crossed lovers was that he thought if he married the two, the two families that had a hatred for each other would stop feuding. “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be – For this alliance may be so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” Another benefit of Romeo and Juliet’s love was that they could experience greater happiness by being together, and they could bring the best out of each other. Romeo was so depressed at the start of the book because the lady, whom he loved so dearly, did not love him back. “This love feel I, that feel no love in this.” Romeo wanted to love so eagerly, that being with Juliet instantly brightened his day immensely.

The costs of Romeo and Juliet’s love were much more greater than the benefits. The biggest cost was the death of both the star-crossed lovers. Both Romeo and Juliet knew that this relationship was extremely dangerous and was ought to cause some trouble. “My only love sprung from my only hate!” They knew this relationship was what the parents would have wanted not to happen; yet they persisted to love each other, and did whatever it took to be with each other, even if it meant death. The love of Romeo and Juliet caused death to Mercutio (Romeo’s good friend) and death to Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin). Tybalt was angry because Romeo and Mercutio crashed the Capulet’s party. Tybalt also saw Romeo with Juliet that night. If Romeo and Mercutio had not crashed the Capulet’s party, and if Romeo and not seen Juliet, none of these tragic events would have happened. Romeo knew trouble was going to happen. He knew that he had to give up his family, stability and luxury if he was going to love and be with Juliet. But he thought that the love he receives from Juliet, would out weigh all the costs involved with this relationship. Juliet had the same issue. In loving Romeo and being with him, she would have given up her family as well, her possible fame being with Paris, as well as her own luxurious life. Romeo and Juliet shows that love can’t come with just pure happiness and benefits; there are always some costs that come with love.
